WPLCA News
*New Books in the WPLCA Library.
Continuity of Care in Breastfeeding: Best Practices in the Maternity Setting by Karin Caldwell and Cindy Turnwe-Maffei We got two copies of this book, which could be very helpful for hospital based lactation consultants. “This book gives readers strategies to improve patient-centered care and showcases research that supports change.”
Comprehensive Lactation Consultant Exam Review by Linda J. Smith We now have at least 4 copies of this book which was published in 2007. I think it is important that we supply these to women preparing for the exam, because they need to be ready to take our places when we retire!!
Breastfeeding in Hospital: Mothers, Midwives and the Production Line by Fiona Dykes This is a very scholarly book which has a long section at the beginning that I found very difficult to digest. But it does talk about the reasons that a woman’s postpartum experience can be detrimental to her getting off to a good start with breastfeeding. The author is from Great Britain and so the setting is the postpartum wards with midwives providing the care.
*Membership
I took a look at how many members we have prior to our last meeting at the Breastfeeding Center of Pittsburgh and was pleasantly surprised to find that our membership has significantly increased!!
2006 - 31
2007 - 45
2008 - 58
This is an increase of 87% in two years. Wonder if we can show another increase next year?
*Preparation for IBCLC Certification Class
We have been asked to make our membership aware of a preparatory course being offered in Ohio. You will have to decide if this is the right price and education for you. The flyer for this course is attached. Go to the Downloads section of the website to view and print this information.
*Meeting at the Breastfeeding Center of Pittsburgh
There were 30 of us at that meeting—the space was definitely filled to capacity. One of the exciting things Judy told us about was the BEST program, which will provide training at pediatric offices, will meet with doctors at a hospital based training or will do a Grand Rounds presentation. The trainings purpose is to teach doctors more breastfeeding supportive practices to be implemented in their offices. This program is supported by a grant and does offer CME’s.
There were two items left at that meeting -- a black printed scarf and a wool hat – Valerie Ladies tag inside. You can contact Judy Gutowski to reclaim these items.
*Our Next Meeting (and future meetings)
Our next meeting will be on Monday, March 2 at Washington Hospital and the two presenters will be:
Edith Davidson, talking about the value of breastfeeding support groups and leading a panel discussion with experienced group leaders.
Dr. Goldberg, who will talk about tongue tie.
Please go to the DOWNLOADS section of the website for the registration form for this meeting as well as directions to the Washington Hospital. We look forward to seeing you on March 2nd!
We are working on topics and dates for the rest of our meetings in 2009. News about these meetings will be posted on the website as soon as it is available.
*WPLCA Finances
The balance in the checkbook at the end of 2008 is $3656.68. Our financial report shows that we have had income of $1982.34 for the year.
*CERPs and CEUs in the Journal of Human Lactation
JHL May 2008 ”Is Breastfeeding Fair? Tensions in Feminist Perspectives on Breastfeeding and the Family” This is approved for 2 L-CERPs and 2 contact hours. The cost for the CERPS is $20 for ILCA members and $40 for non-members.
